FAQ's

What is Archery?

  • There are two main types of archery, the first being target archery and the second field archery.
  • Target archery is what you see at the Olympics and is perhaps the most common type of archery practiced.  The archer has to shoot a number of arrows at targets at a set distance.
  • Field archery differs as the targets are set up over a course (usually woodland).  Distances in this type of archery are usually unmarked and can include animal targets as well as traditional round targets.

What equipment do I need?

  • The first piece of equipment that you will need is a bow.  There are many varying styles to choose from, namely the self bow, the recurve bow and the longbow are good for beginners.
  • There is also the crossbow that is very powerful and not recommended for beginners.
  • You will require arrows to shoot with, which consist of a shaft with an arrowhead attached at the front, and fletchings and a nock at the back.
  • You may also wish to invest in protective equipment such as a chest guard or arm guards to protect the inside of your arm.

Rules:

  • Archery competitions may be held indoors and outdoors and generally the rules will differ from competition to competition.
  • Each competition will be divided into ends with each archer shooting either 3 or 6 arrows per end, depending on the type of round.
  • For an indoor competition archers shoot 20 ends with 3 arrows in each end. The distance that archers will shoot from, in an indoor competition, vary from 18m to 25m.
  • Outdoor distances range from 30m up to 90m; the Olympic games use a distance of 70m.
  • All archers have a time limit per end to shoot their arrows and in a 3 arrow end(under FITA rules) this is generally 2 minutes.
  • Other rules are put in place to ensure the safety of the archers as the sport involves the use of potential lethal equipment. Competitors must wait for a command before they shoot and then another signal before they can collect their arrows.
