FAQ's

  • Badminton is played either as a singles game or as a doubles game.
  • Equipment required by players is a badminton racket and a shuttlecock.
  • The game is played on a rectangular court 6.1m wide and 13.4m long.  During a singles match, however, the width of the court is 5.18m which is marked out with white boundary lines down the length of the court.
  • The net which stands over the centre of the court should be 1.55m high.
  • To begin a match, players should toss a coin allowing the winner to choose which side of the court to play on or whether to gain first service.
  • Each game is played to 21 points; these points are gained by winning a rally.
  • Games must be won with a two point lead.  If a game is tied at 20-20, the game continues until one side achieves a two-point lead or until one side scores 30 points (30-29 is an acceptable score for victory).
  • First service – the shuttlecock should be below the server’s waist when it makes contact with the racket.  The shuttlecock must make it past the receiver’s service line and remain within the boundaries.
  • An incorrect service will result in a fault – receiver gains a point.
  • In a singles match the server must serve from the right, if they have an even point score, and from the left if they have an odd point score.  In doubles, the sever remains the same throughout the game and the same rule applies.
  • After the serve, the rally can take place anywhere within the boundaries. Once the shuttlecock hits the floor on the opponents side of the court a point is gained. If the shuttlecock should fall outside of the boundary lines, however, the opponent would gain a point.
