FAQ's

Spinning

This is a group cycling class that aims to improve health and fitness through calorie burning.

When beginning a spinning class, ensure that you let your instructor know it is your first time.  They should be able to help you with the bike and its features to ensure you get the most out of the work-out.

  • Adjust the seat on the bike so that your knees are slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
  • Ensure your arms are a comfortable distance from the handlebars and your elbows slightly bent.

During the class:

  • Follow the instructors lead
  • Go at a pace that feels comfortable for you

Body Pump

Body Pump is a weight based exercise class, usually lasting 55 minutes, focusing on various muscles in the body.  Created in 1991 by Phillip Mills, it is now found in over 70 countries and 10,000 health clubs and gyms worldwide.

Using free-weights, barbells and an aerobic step, participants can choose their weights based on the exercise and their personal goals.  The focus of the class is towards muscle endurance using several repetitions of exercise.

The class is choreographed so that each track played targets a specific muscle group.  Most Body Pump classes should follow the format below:

  • Warm-up
  • Legs/Squats
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Triceps
  • Biceps
  • Lunges
  • Shoulders
  • Abdominals
  • Cool down

Step Aerobics

This type of exercise class is distinguished from other forms of aerobics due to the use of an elevated platform, namely a step.

Most classes will be choreographed to music with beginners classes stringing basic steps together to form a routine.  More advanced classes incorporate dance elements such as turns, mambos and stomps.

The main benefits of step aerobics is that it helps burn calories and maintains weight.  The classes also provide endurance training, which helps to maintain the health of your cardiovascular system.  Strength training during the class improves balance and the increased flexibility over time enhances joint movements.

Step aerobics is suitable for people of all ages.
